Gita and Sutras Study & Afternoon Tea with Dina

June 9th, 2013

Once a month on Sunday – FREE!!!! Come together as a community and study the philosophy behind our yoga practice. Handouts will be provided at each session.

The Bhagavad-Gita is the record of a conversation between a young man and God (in the form of Krishna). The young warrior, Arjuna, from the royal Pandava family, is in a state of panic on the morning of a battle – the ‘enemies’ he is expected to fight are cousins he knows well. In this desperate predicament, Arjuna turns to his charioteer, Krishna, for help. The answers he gets are not exactly what he wants to hear, but it is Krishna’s opportunity to tell a mortal about how the universe operates, and the best approach to life.

The greatest classical text from the yoga school of Indian philosophy is the Yoga Sutras by Patanjali, written in the second century BC. These “threads” on yoga or union, are extremely terse, stating concisely and often precisely, essential points or techniques. Originally these teachings were oral and were explained and interpreted by commentaries from a teacher guiding the student.

“We will be studying concepts from both texts. Copies of the books will be available at the studio for students to borrow and may also be available for purchase. Handouts will be provided as well. Please join us for engaging conversation regarding the philosophy behind our yoga practice. Tea and treats will be provided.”

Workshops with Leslie Kaminoff

August 4th and 5th, 2013

Leslie Kaminoff is a yoga educator inspired by the tradition of T.K.V. Desikachar. He is an internationally recognized specialist with thirty four years’ experience in the fields of yoga and breath anatomy. He leads anatomy and yoga methodology workshops for many of the leading yoga associations, schools and training programs in the world. Leslie’s book Yoga Anatomy, (co-authored with Amy Matthews), sold out its first print run of 19,000 within one month of its June 2007 release, and has been a top-selling yoga book ever since. With many international translations, and the release of the newly-revised second edition of Yoga Anatomy, there are currently over 500,000 copies in print.

Leslie is the founder of The Breathing Project, a non-profit educational corporation dedicated to the teaching of individualized, breath-centered yoga practice and education in New York City, where from October to June, Leslie can be found teaching his highly respected year-long courses in Yoga Anatomy. His courses are also available online to a worldwide audience at yogaanatomy.net. Currently there are 1000 students from 39 countries participating in this growing online community.

Leslie has also helped to organize international yoga conferences while serving as Vice-President of Unity in Yoga, and was part of the ad-hoc committee that established national standards for yoga teacher training. Prior to the formation of The Yoga Alliance, Leslie was a strong voice in the ensuing national debate regarding the application of those certification standards. This dialogue resulted in the creation of e-Sutra, an influential e-mail list and blog that has an active worldwide membership, and IYEA (The Independent Yoga Educators of America). His personal website is yogaanatomy.org.

Leslie has also released two innovative instructional products: The Human Kinetics DVD “Breath-Centered Yoga with Leslie Kaminoff” and the Sounds True Audio CD “Freeing the Breath – Health, Relaxation and Clarity Through Better Breathing.”

One week Ashtanga Intensive with Angelique Sandas

August 11th-16th, 2013 6am-9am

This week long course is designed to give students the full experience of a regular Mysore practice. The term “Mysore” refers to the way the Ashtanga Yoga Method was taught by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois in the city of Mysore, India. It is a monitored self-practice in a group setting. This dynamic gives each student the ability to work at their own level from beginner to advanced, while enjoying the inspiration of being part of a focused group energy. Each student is encouraged and supported by the teacher as they memorize the sequence and develop a personal rhythm and relationship to the practice. The student is taught progressively according to his or her individual needs. In this special class, you learn to take individual responsibility for your yoga practice.

This established sequence is traditionally practiced every day, and this one week course will include six morning classes and three afternoon sessions that explore some off the mat practices and other limbs of Ashtanga Yoga. Mysore style is one of the best and safest ways to learn the more advanced asanas or postures, with proper skill and dedication. Appropriate for the absolute beginner as well as the more advanced practitioner
